State-of-the-Art Biorepository expands capabilities

A year ago Masy Systems, Inc. announced our intention to open a state-of-the-art cGMP biopharma storage capability at our new location in Pepperell, Massachusetts. Last month we were very pleased to inform the biopharma community that the initial phase of the biorepository is complete and we are accepting product from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device and healthcare industries, as well as academic and governmental institutions.

Masy would now like to inform the community that the next step of the facility build out is complete and our new stability chambers are operational. This adds four walk-in temperature and humidity controlled units for stability storage to our expanding capabilities list. These units are all capable of running at any conditions between 25°C/60%RH and 40°C/75%RH as well as 2°C - 8°C. The chambers have been validated and are ready to store customer product. In addition to these large units, four validated reach-in units have also been connected to the infrastructure. They are capable of operating at typical ICH conditions as well as custom conditions for unusual temperature and humidity combinations. Two of the units operate as photostability chambers also; both Option 1 (daylight and indoor indirect daylight) and Option 2 (cool white florescent and near ultraviolet) conditions are available.

Space remains in our validated reach-in chambers to provide secure ambient, 2°C - 8°C, -20°C, -80°C and LN₂ storage. Masy will provide space rental options to suit your needs. In addition, we are happy to accept customers’ chambers into the facility. Ample space exists for the addition of multiple chambers which Masy will operate, monitor and maintain on our clients’ behalf.

Other features of the Masy BioPharma Storage facility include a computerized inventory management and bar coding system to track client samples from the moment they reach our door until they are back in your possession. A validated Masy Commander facility monitoring system records two temperature points in each chamber every 10 seconds with the data backed up on a remote server. The facility is equipped with three pairs of air conditioning units, each pair capable of maintaining the correct temperature in the repository during the most extreme of outside conditions. Two massive diesel generators, each capable of powering the entire building, have been tied into the power grid to provide emergency power if need be. CO₂ and LN₂ cylinders are maintained on site for manual fill as a last line of response if a situation occurs. Finally, a dedicated (and local) staff will respond to any abnormal events 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Masy has incorporated redundant alarms into the system to alert repository staff of significant temperature changes within the chambers or a loss of power to the facility.

The facility also has redundant security features, which includes 24 hour video surveillance and alarms, controlled keyless access at both the company and Biorepository level, and the very latest in electronic locks with audit trails on the chambers themselves.

Another unique service being offered is contingency planning; for a modest fee customers can reserve space in the Masy facility to be used in case of emergency. Should an impending weather event or other crisis occur there will be a place waiting for your samples at the Masy BioPharma Storage facility.

The next phase of the biopharma storage facility will add a cascading storage unit engineered and assembled by Bahnson Environmental Specialties. The system consists of a walk-in 5°C unit, from which is entered a walk-in -20°C chamber. Within the -20°C chamber a six door -80°C reach-in vault is installed. Masy is expecting this additional storage capability to be available in July.
